Whale season off Honolulu, 2026-27

The first humpbacks reach Hawaii in November, and by January guests on sunset boats start writing about them. Here is when the season peaks, which whale watches leave Honolulu in 2027, and what a sunset cruise adds.

Every winter about half of the North Pacific's humpback whales come to Hawaii to mate, give birth and nurse their calves, according to NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Oahu sits inside that range, and Honolulu's boats change their schedules for it.

This post covers the 2026-27 season: the months that matter, the morning whale watches you can book now, and how good your odds are from an evening boat that you booked for the sunset.

The quick answer

NOAA says humpbacks are seen in Hawaii from November through April, with the peak from January through March. The Star of Honolulu's 2027 whale watch runs January 2 to 30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, then daily from February 1 to March 20, at $78.81 per adult. Sunset sails often see whales in the same months, but only the whale watch comes with a sighting guarantee.

When is humpback whale season in Hawaii in 2026-27?

From November through April, with the peak from January through March, per NOAA's sanctuary.

The sanctuary's own page gives the window: humpbacks are generally seen from November through April each year, and the peak is January to March. November and December bring the early arrivals: a bonus if you see one, not something to plan around.

For a trip planned around whales, aim for February. You are in the peak, the Star of Honolulu runs its whale watch every day, and the sun sets late enough (about 6:22 PM on February 1) for an evening sail after a morning on the water.

When does the Star of Honolulu whale watch run in 2027?

January 2 to 30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, then daily from February 1 to March 20, from 9:15 to 11:15 AM.

The Early Bird Whale Watch sails from Pier 8 at Aloha Tower Marketplace, the same pier as the dinner cruises, on the same 232-foot ship with four walk-around decks and a 60-foot observation deck. Check in by 8:45 AM if you drive yourself. The price is $78.81 per adult and $47.29 per child, with homemade pineapple banana bread and Kona blend coffee and tea included, and a bar for anything stronger.

The ship comes with a whale guarantee: if you see no whale, you get a "Whale Check" to sail again until you do. Certified naturalists narrate the trip. Driving? The operator validates parking at Piers 5 and 6 at a $20 flat rate for up to 4 hours for whale watch guests; round-trip transport from Waikiki is an add-on at checkout.

Which other whale watches leave from Waikiki and Ko Olina?

Hawaii Nautical, Holokai Catamaran and MANA Cruises all run winter whale trips on smaller boats, from December to March.

The big ship is the steady, step-free option. The catamarans put you closer to the water and leave from Waikiki itself. Prices and seasons below come from each operator's own site.

Can you see whales from a sunset dinner cruise?

Often in the peak months, never for certain. Only the morning whale watch comes with a guarantee.

The reviews tell the story. On the Friday fireworks catamaran, three guests in April 2026 wrote about whales breaching, and one said the captain "did his best to get us near an unexpected breaching whale at the end of the season". On the Holokai sunset sail, a March 2026 guest wrote: "We saw a lot of whales, which was an added bonus." Off Waianae, a January 2025 guest on the West Oahu cruise watched "whales putting on quite a show".

The odds are best on a small boat that can slow down and look. On the Star of Honolulu's sunset cruises dinner keeps you busy at the table, so step out on deck between courses and scan the water. If whales are the point of the trip, book the morning whale watch and keep the evening for the sunset.

How close can boats get to humpback whales in Hawaii?

No closer than 100 yards. It is illegal to approach a humpback within that distance.

NOAA's boating guide for the sanctuary is clear: do not approach within 100 yards of a humpback, slow to six knots within 400 yards, and leave the way you came. Whales do not read the rule, and sometimes they swim up to a boat. The Star of Honolulu's FAQ says its crew takes care to avoid injuring whales when that happens.

A good captain will put the boat where the whales are heading rather than chase them. Bring binoculars or a phone with a zoom lens: 100 yards is far for a camera.

When is the Sanctuary Ocean Count in 2027?

On the last Saturday of January, February and March, from 8:00 AM to 12:15 PM: in 2027 that is January 30, February 27 and March 27.

The Sanctuary Ocean Count is NOAA's volunteer whale count from the shore of Oahu, Hawaii Island and Kauai. Volunteers watch from set sites and log every whale they see. It runs on the last Saturday of the three peak months; NOAA had published the 2026 dates (January 31, February 28, March 28) and registration goes through oceancount.org.

It is free, it is a morning, and it teaches you to spot a blow. Do it before a sunset sail and you will see more from the deck in the evening.
